Rabies

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system, almost always proving fatal once symptoms appear. It spreads primarily through the saliva of infected animals, often via bites or scratches. Globally, tens of thousands of people, mostly in Asia and Africa, are affected by rabies each year, but these deaths are preventable through timely post-exposure vaccination. The rabies vaccine trains the immune system to recognise and neutralise the rabies virus, providing reliable protection for both pre-exposure (preventive) and post-exposure (after an animal bite) situations. Vaccination remains the most effective and evidence-based defence against this deadly disease.

The Rabies Vaccine is used to prevent:

• Rabies infection following a bite or exposure to a potentially rabid animal
• Fatal neurological complications from untreated rabies
• Occupational exposure in high-risk groups (veterinary, wildlife, laboratory personnel)
• Pre-exposure protection for travellers to rabies-endemic areas

• Provides lifesaving protection against one of the world’s deadliest viruses
• Prevents disease onset when administered promptly after exposure
• Clinically proven efficacy; recommended by the WHO, CDC, and MoHFW, India
• Offers peace of mind for individuals frequently exposed to animals
• Safe for adults and children, including for repeat doses when required
• Reduces the public health burden and prevents avoidable deaths through effective immunisation

The rabies vaccine is well-tolerated, with mostly mild, short-term reactions such as:

Serious allergic reactions are extremely uncommon and are promptly managed under medical supervision.

Before receiving the rabies vaccine:

• Inform your doctor of any severe allergies or prior vaccine reactions.
• Vaccination should be postponed only for major illnesses—minor infections don’t usually require delay.
• If you’re receiving post-exposure prophylaxis, begin vaccination immediately—delays can be life-threatening.
• Stay hydrated and eat a light meal before your appointment.
• Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the upper arm.
• Remain under observation for about 15 minutes after the injection.
